Oct. 9-15, 2017 - Maya Museums, Thanksgiving, Ellingtons, Monson Cookies, Bojs, Immigration, Seventy Amado

Week 8 ... Oct 9-15, 2017 ...

Monday

On our Monday day off, we were driven to a beautiful new museum in the city that showcased millennia of indigenous artifacts of Maya life in the area now called Guatemala. It was interesting. The following photos were the exhibits that interested Larry the most....

All through history, the Maya have worn colorful, ornate, painstakingly handwoven clothing, including matching headwear.

Monday was Canadian Thanksgiving Day. We FaceTime-visited with our children and their children, gathered together for the occasion. They wondered why we weren’t tanned. Yes, we have wonderful weather in Guatemala but we spend 8 hours a day in the temple and it’s the rainy season. We didn’t prepare anything special for dinner.

At family home evening, we heard from two missionary couples...

Also at the Family Home Evening, Nancy and Tim Fisher related their warm visit with the extended Boj family in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Forty-one years ago Tim and his companion taught and baptized the family. All eight children were eventually sealed to their spouses in the temple, most of them in Mesa, Arizona. At the time, this was the closest temple. All the extended family are active in the church today.

Friday

We missed two hours of our temple shift in order to sign documents at the Guatemalan immigration office downtown. They also took mugshots of our faces. This establishes us as residents of Guatemala, no longer tourists. Despite the long lines of people, we were able to get in and out with ease with the help of a young woman employed by the LDS Church.

Saturday

Our oldest son turned 43 years old today. Here’s the birthday card Larry made and emailed to him....

Sunday

Emeritus Seventy Carlos Amado attended our ward today.

  1. I'm enjoying your blog so much and it's interesting how it parallels my experience in Ghana in many ways. Here too the locals wear bright colourful clothing and many travel a long distance from Côte d'Ivoire and Benin to come to the temple. We serve 5 days a week and the temple can be quite a busy place. However, since there are 9 Canadians here, we are celebrating Thanksgiving tonite (I know, a week late) and having a roast chicken (turkeys here are pricey and gamey) dinner with dishes similar to what we have at home. Missionary service is a great blessing.
