July 16-22, 2018 Back to work, watercolor paintings, dental work

Image
More attempts at watercoloring ... 4 hours in the dental chair — BOTH of us! We endured the creation of dental bridges in our mouths. To get his bridge, Larry first had to have a root canal and an implant done. We were sore when the freezing came off. We’re STILL sore four days later.  On a more positive note ... The Temple still could be seen through the windows ... And, as a bonus photo, this is what Larry’s first dental bridge looks like ...  Now he needs another one just above it so that he can finally be able to chew on his left side. Yay. Aren’t you glad I included this last news item?

July 11-15, 2018 Angel Moroni, wooden fruit, The Zoo

Guatemala City Temple maintenance  continues   🌋   N ow for the rest of our fun activities during Week #2  of our vacation ... The Holmans had a strong desire to visit a little workshop in a town named Jocotenango, before the end of our two weeks of vacation.   They invited us Jensons to go along with them.  This entailed their finding someone to drive us  for an hour and  a  half.  Larry was quite clueless where we were going and why.  In this workshop a man carved fruits 🍎 🍌 🍉 out of wood.  Larry finally perked up and decided he and Babette should also have a wooden fruit display on OUR table. It cost us the equivalent of $60 Canadian. Larry thought it was a steal. 😁 Woody Woodpecker’s mouth is watering.  We visited a jade jewelry manufacturing  shop in the town of Antigua, while we  were in the area. Babette bought some  earrings.  P The next day we went to the  only zoo  in Guatemala...

July 9-10, 2018 Vacation week #2, ruins of Copán Honduras,

Image
Instead of 3.8 hours, it took 6.5 hours to get to the town of Copan, Honduras. But only 4.5 to return.   Stop at the international border: Park your car and go inside a building to show your passport and pay a small fee.  You get 24 Honduran lempiras for a U.S. dollar. WiFi! Couldn’t get it in my room in two 4-star hotels last week. But I could in this small quaint hotel in Honduras.  Nia Lola waitresses use their heads.  “Twisted.” There’s no W in the Spanish dictionary.  They should have come up with a better name for their restaurant. Maybe their minds were twisted at that time. But... the food was good! Now... The Ruins... Excellent walking exercise... 😀 Larry was, like “ugh.” 😰 Looking down from the highest point of the Ruins of Copán: the Maya king’s sprawling home site.  Ancient buildings were not the only things to see in the park ... Babette... only ___ years.  More vacation destinations in the next blog....

July 2-8, 2018 5-day vacation

Image
( Vacation week 2 will be in eastern Guatemala and Honduras.) The Week 1 vacationers... Quetzaltenango is a 4-hour drive from Guatemala City, if you don’t stop at small town street markets, as we did.  Price: C$202. Worth it.  The highlight of our vacation... The magnificent LDS Temple in Quetzaltenango  Quetzaltenango is the second largest city in Guatemala.  It only cost us $87 to stay in this expansive hotel complex. But we didn’t have Internet in our rooms.  Third largest amusement park in Latin America.  Seems to have used Disneyland as it’s model.  Cost Q50 ($9) for retirees to get in.  Statue of the man who built the park,  at the park entrance. Like Walt Disney  at Disneyland.  We all did the splash ride.... it was fun.... Larry rode the roller coaster. Too many sudden twists and up-side-downs. My seat banged my head side to side.... Babette, Christine & Sherry rode the ship. I didn’t. My stomach would not be able...
