Jan 8-14, 2018 macadamia farm, Fuego volcano, slide, Jumanji movie, Hobbit hotel, Tikal ruins

Temple closed for another week,
so we visited places where there were ...
Macadamia nuts

It takes 7-9 months for a nut to be ready to harvest. Trees
produce year round.

Temple closed for another week,
so we visited places where there were ...
Hobbits

We were “underwhelmed” by the hobbit houses and grounds.
Nice start, though. Maybe in a few years it will rate three stars
as a hotel.

From the parking lot to the village, the climb is so steep, you
need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. We walked down the hill after
our stay. It was so steep, it was hard to keep your footing.
Larry discovered new muscles, his “verticals.”

2 interesting sights

Left: Active volcano Fuego puffed out a white cloud of steam on our
way to the macadamia farm (photo courtesy of fellow missionary Nancy Fisher). Right: I wondered why I never saw children using
the slide in the local park. Answer: the surface is concrete! Wha’?

We saw another movie; Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with
the Normans and Fishers. The Alba Theatres only charge Q30
($6). It was a movie neither of us would’ve gone to see on our
own. But it was a social event and got us out of our boring apartment. The premise of the film was juvenile: what would it
be like to actually be in a video game. We’ve never played a
video game. We liked watching the special effects (particularly
the albino hippo stampedes) and Jack Black trying
to act like a high school girl. Dwayne Johnson’s arm muscles
and Karen Gillan’s toned bare midriff were eye-catching as well,
for some members of the audience.

Our dear friends from Calgary, Debbie and Al Kirkham, flew down
to visit us for 6 days. Yay!  It is untrue that Al, our bishop in Calgary,
came down to check on Larry.

Big vacation outing ...

Coldest temperature we’ve had so far this winter in Guatemala.

There was more to see in Tikal than ruins. Turkey and better
monkey photo were taken by Debbie Kirkham.

We had a great time in Tikal.
