July 2-8, 2018 5-day vacation

(Vacation week 2 will be in eastern Guatemala and Honduras.)

The Week 1 vacationers...

Quetzaltenango is a 4-hour drive from Guatemala City, if you don’t stop at small town street markets, as we did.

Price: C$202. Worth it.

The highlight of our vacation...
The magnificent LDS Temple in Quetzaltenango

Quetzaltenango is the second largest city in Guatemala.

It only cost us $87 to stay in this expansive hotel complex. But we didn’t have Internet in our rooms.

Third largest amusement park in Latin America.
Seems to have used Disneyland as it’s model.
Cost Q50 ($9) for retirees to get in.

Statue of the man who built the park,
at the park entrance. Like Walt Disney
at Disneyland.

We all did the splash ride.... it was fun....

Larry rode the roller coaster. Too many sudden twists and up-side-downs. My seat banged my head side to side....

Babette, Christine & Sherry rode the ship. I didn’t. My stomach would not be able to stand it.

Ruins & exotic animals

Olmec influence can be seen in huge, potbellied figures. By the late Preclassic period, however, Mayan influence was beginning to creep in and replace Olmec art. During the classic Mayan period, incredible jade masks were carved here. Takalik Abaj was raided around 300 AD and its monuments were defaced; some were rebuilt after 600 AD.

Back home ...

Whew. That was a long blog. Zzzz.

  2. Wow! What an exciting time you had! I got a chuckle out of the market. A chicken with the bananas? Oh well ............

Life continues at home with the usual fluctuations in temperature. Not sure how to dress for this weather.

Our Coral comes home next week, which is very exciting. The time has gone by so quickly.

Take care, keep on enjoying your mission.
