To senior missionaries:
“You are models for us in Latin America”

We in Latin America want our church units to be like yours in North America — self-suffient and able to help other units in the world. So said José Uceda, the new president of the Central America Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to 20 retirees called to serve various missions.
We see you happy with 45 or so years of marriage. You got there by progressing in the church and in your careers in a particular way. If you would like to help Latinos, in more than the area specialty of your mission, I would like to see you take interest in a young man, priest age. Encourage him to further his education so he can have a good job that will allow him to have time to help build the church here. The Church of Jesus Christ has been in these parts for 60 years, but we are still young in the ways that the Lord wants us to go. we are losing young people from church activity.
Going to church every
Sunday is a huge change for us.
Haircuts

While I was pedaling a stationary bike in the gym of the Mission Training Centre, in came a herd of young missionaries. They were there to get haircuts.

I got a haircut too. I should have tried to get it with the young missionaries. My regular barber was on vacation. The kid substituting for him was not punctual in opening up the shop. It took my fourth visit to find it open. He wasn’t punctual in the cutting either. He took 75 minutes to cut the guy-before-me’s hair. I said to him, “Can you cut my hair in less than an hour?” He did so, in 50 minutes. A haircut shouldn’t take longer than 20 minutes, I say. When I left, there were four men stacked up for haircuts. Poor souls.

Teeth

New front teeth — caps (bottom photo). Compare with the before-photo.

New back teeth: two bridges replacing the gaps I had before.
